Nova Scotia gains two new long-term care facilities
April, 2011
Two brand new long-term care facilities have recently opened their doors in different regions of Nova Scotia. Located in Falmouth and Middleton respectively, the long-term care facilities aim to provide support and help for seniors in Nova Scotia.
Windsor Elms Village, located in Falmouth is an 108-bed nursing home facility that was recently built to replace the older Windsor Elms.
The province recently revamped its design standards to emphasize home-like surroundings. The new Windsor Elms Village was created to keep in line with the new standards, offering residents a choice of 12, nine-resident neighbourhoods.
Education Minister, Ramona Jennex spoke on behalf of Health and Wellness Minister, Maureen MacDonald saying, “Windsor Elms Village will enable its residents to receive the care and support they need in a facility that feels like home. This facility allows residents to be close to their families and friends and remain in the community.”
Residents have access to 24-hour nursing care, nutritional and pharmacy services, occupational and physiotherapy, a spiritual room and a choice of six therapeutic gardens.
The second new long-term care facility in Middleton is the Heart of the Valley. The seniors residence is operated by GEM and consists of 50-beds. The facility, like the Windsor Elms Village, is built in line with the new provincial design standards. The two, 12-unit households and two, 13-unit households have many of the same amenities as the Windsor Elms Village, including common areas and 24-hour medical care.
The units also have cathedral ceilings and ample amounts of natural light, with residents having access to an outdoor courtyard and spiritual room as well.
“This facility moves away from the traditional idea of a nursing home and focuses on the comfort and care of each individual resident.” Said Colin Bagnell, GEM Health Care Group. “It allows them to be more independent and have flexibility and control over their day-to-day activities.”
